The Mind Diet – Good for body, mind & soul
Scientists unveil The Mind Diet and prove how food can improve your brain function .
This is such fantastic news from scientists from Rush University Medical Centre in Chicago who created The Mind Diet by combining two well researched diets (The Mediterranean and the DASH diets) to see if diet can reduce cognitive decline and normal brain ageing. Basically these foods have shown themselves to be NEUROPROTECTIVE.
This study, as discussed on The Guardian shows that a diet high in LEAFY GREEN VEGETABLES (my all time favourite) is key to reducing cognitive decline as we age. Adding legumes, nuts and the odd glass of red wine is also essential. Reducing red meat, fatty fried foods, butter, margarines, sweets and cakes helps. The only fruit they advise is berries – which are super high in antioxidants.
Antioxidants and healthy fats seem to be the key of The Mind Diet – vegetables packed with phytonutrients, and beneficial fats from nuts and seafood. Adding legumes, leafy greens and whole grains helps with fibre intake. A healthy fibre intake not only is essential for a happy bowel function but leads to balanced blood sugar resulting in a happy mood.
The research suggests that eating this way may make your feel 7.5 years younger than you are. Which is really great news.
So what’s foods are included in The Mind Diet:
At least 3 servings of whole grains a day
6 servings of leafy greens a week plus one other veggie serving a day
2 servings of berries a week
1 serving of fish a week
2 servings of poultry a week
3 servings of legumes a week
5 servings of nuts a week
A daily serving of alcohol, preferably red wine for its long list of health benefits
This diet is totally NATUROPATH APPROVED by me – I think it is a great one. Maybe one or two less serving of whole grains would be better – but ultimately this is a fantastic way to eat! This is eating the wholefood way!
